How to Test Bilge Pumps Before Every Trip

A bilge pump is easy to forget when the boat is clean, dry and ready for a family day on the coast. Yet knowing how to test bilge pumps is one of the simplest checks you can make before casting off. A pump that runs when asked, discharges water properly and has a dependable automatic setting provides valuable reassurance - particularly on a RIB, day boat or cruiser that spends time on a mooring.
Bilge pumps are not a substitute for keeping the boat watertight. They are a final line of defence against rainwater, wash-down water, small leaks and other unwanted water collecting below deck. Regular checks help you find a loose hose, blocked outlet or weak battery before it becomes the reason an enjoyable trip is cut short.
Start with a safe, dry inspection
Before introducing water to the bilge, look closely at the installation. Open the relevant hatch and make sure you can safely reach the pump, strainer and float switch without standing in water or disturbing wiring. Isolate shore power if connected, keep fingers clear of moving parts and never work around damaged electrical cables.
Check the pump body for cracks, loose mounting screws and obvious corrosion at terminals or connectors. On smaller leisure boats, debris is often the main enemy: leaves, sand, fishing line, grit and cleaning cloth fibres can gather around the intake. Remove any debris carefully, then inspect the hose from pump to outlet for kinks, splits or loose clips.
The discharge hose should rise continuously towards its outlet where possible, with no low point that can hold water and add unnecessary load to the pump. Check the skin fitting outside the hull too. A blocked outlet can make a perfectly healthy pump appear to have failed.
If the bilge is unusually wet, do not simply pump it dry and carry on. Take a moment to identify the source. Rain entering through a cover is very different from water around a stern gland, transom fitting or hull joint. Salt water, fuel smells or a growing water level all warrant prompt investigation.
How to test bilge pumps manually
Most boats have a manual override at the helm, on a switch panel or through a dedicated circuit breaker. This should be your first functional test.
Make sure the battery master switch is on and the relevant bilge pump breaker or fuse is live. Press the manual pump switch and listen. A healthy pump should start promptly with a steady motor sound. Then look over the side for water flowing from the discharge outlet.
A dry-running centrifugal pump may sound as though it is working, but that only proves the motor is spinning. To test its pumping performance, pour a small amount of clean water into the bilge around the pump intake. Use enough to cover the intake, but not so much that it reaches electrical connections, stored equipment or vulnerable areas of the boat.
The pump should draw water down quickly and discharge a clear, consistent flow overboard. Once the intake is clear, release the switch. Do not leave a pump running dry for longer than necessary, especially if the manufacturer advises against it. Some pumps tolerate brief dry running, while others rely on the pumped water for cooling or lubrication.
If the motor runs but water does not leave the boat, start with the simple causes. The intake may be blocked, the strainer may be clogged, the hose may be kinked, or the outlet may be obstructed. A weak trickle can also point to a partial blockage, an undersized hose, a tired pump or a poor electrical connection reducing voltage under load.
Test the automatic float switch separately
An automatic bilge pump system matters most when nobody is aboard. Depending on the installation, your boat may use a separate float switch, an electronic sensor built into the pump, or a fully automatic cartridge-style unit. Each needs a slightly different check, so refer to the pump manufacturer's instructions as well as the boat's wiring layout.
For a separate float switch, lift the float gently by hand. The pump should activate and continue running while the float is raised. Lower it and confirm the pump stops. Avoid forcing the float through its travel, as a float switch can jam if its arm catches on a hose, cable tie or loose item in the bilge.
Then repeat the test with water. Add clean water slowly until the float naturally rises and turns the pump on. Watch that it pumps the water out and switches off as the level falls. This is the most useful real-world test because it confirms the float moves freely and is positioned at a sensible height.
A pump that runs manually but not automatically may have a failed float switch, a blown fuse in the automatic circuit, a wiring issue or an incorrectly configured battery supply. On many boats, the automatic circuit is wired directly to the battery through an inline fuse so it remains live when the main battery switch is off. That arrangement is intentional, but it also means the fuse, cable condition and battery state deserve particular attention.
Check the battery and electrical supply
Bilge pumps are only as dependable as the electrical system supporting them. A corroded terminal can pass enough current for a brief spin on a quiet berth, yet fail when the pump must lift water through a long discharge hose.
Look for clean, secure terminals and sound insulation on every connection. Any green corrosion, heat staining, brittle cable or exposed copper should be addressed. Check that fuses match the pump manufacturer's specified rating. Never fit a larger fuse simply to stop it blowing - a fuse is there to protect the cable and reduce fire risk.
If you have a battery monitor or voltmeter, observe voltage while the pump is running. A significant drop may indicate a weak battery, poor connection or cable that is too small for the circuit. This is particularly relevant on boats left afloat between trips, where the automatic pump may need to operate after heavy rain.
It is also worth considering battery capacity against the likely water load. A small automatic pump can manage occasional rainwater well, but it cannot compensate for a serious breach or run indefinitely on a neglected battery. Keep battery terminals maintained and make charging part of your regular ownership routine.
Verify the discharge route and anti-backflow measures
Water leaving the pump must leave the boat, not return to the bilge when the pump stops. Watch the outlet during your test and listen for water draining back through the hose afterwards. A small amount can be normal where hose routing creates a vertical lift, but repeated cycling can suggest excessive backflow or a problem with the discharge arrangement.
Some installations use non-return valves, but these are not always the answer. They can restrict flow, collect debris and fail closed. The preferred arrangement depends on the boat's design, hose run and manufacturer guidance. Do not alter through-hull fittings, loops or valves without understanding how the system is intended to work.
If your boat has a manual bilge pump as well as an electric one, test that too. Operate the handle through several full strokes, check the diaphragm and hose for leaks, and make sure the handle is accessible. In an electrical failure, a well-maintained manual pump is a practical backup rather than an ornament hidden in a locker.
Build bilge pump checks into your routine
For a boat used regularly through the season, a quick manual and automatic test before every meaningful trip is sensible. Carry out a more thorough inspection after winter lay-up, prolonged storage, heavy weather, a grounding, major cleaning work or any electrical repair near the bilge.
Keep the bilge clean and uncluttered. Loose gear can obstruct a float switch at precisely the wrong moment, while oil, fuel or contaminated water should be dealt with responsibly rather than pumped overboard. If a pump cycles unexpectedly while the boat is unattended, treat it as a warning to investigate, not a nuisance to silence.
